Future of Work

Human-led.
AI-enabled.

The future of work in Global Capability Centres is not about replacing human judgment with machines. It is about designing operating models where human intelligence and artificial intelligence each do what they do best—together creating capability that neither could achieve alone.

Operating Model

The Six-Layer Architecture

Modern GCCs require an integrated operating architecture where six layers work together. Each layer has a distinct role, and the relationships between layers determine how effectively the GCC can operate, scale, and deliver value.

LAYER 1

People

The foundation layer. Human judgment, ethical decision-making, creative problem-solving, and authentic leadership provide the context within which all other layers operate.

LAYER 2

AI

Artificial intelligence that analyses data, generates content, makes predictions, and automates routine cognitive tasks. The AI layer amplifies what humans can accomplish.

LAYER 3

Data

The evidence layer. Structured and unstructured data from internal and external sources provides the factual foundation for analysis, decision-making, and performance measurement.

LAYER 4

Processes

Standardised workflows and operational procedures that define how work gets done. Good processes create consistency, enable measurement, and support both human and AI execution.

LAYER 5

Agents

Autonomous or semi-autonomous systems that execute defined tasks with minimal human intervention. Agentic AI can pursue defined goals, use multiple tools, and adapt to changing conditions within guardrails.

LAYER 6

Governance

The control layer that ensures security, compliance, privacy, accountability, and continuous improvement across all other layers. Governance is not a constraint on capability—it enables sustainable capability.

ACTIVE LAYER 1

People

The foundation layer. Human judgment, ethical decision-making, creative problem-solving, and authentic leadership provide the context within which all other layers operate.

Key Elements

  • Domain expertise and contextual knowledge
  • Ethical reasoning and accountability
  • Creative thinking and innovation
  • Relationship building and stakeholder management

Human Contribution

People bring judgment, ethics, creativity, leadership, and domain context. They define what outcomes matter and why.

AI Contribution

AI augments human capabilities by processing information faster, identifying patterns humans might miss, and generating options for human evaluation.

Governance: Humans retain final decision-making authority on all consequential matters. AI outputs are recommendations, not directives.

Value Creation

Three Sources of Advantage

Human Advantages

Judgment, ethics, creativity, leadership, and domain context that AI cannot replicate.

  • Judgment: The ability to weigh multiple factors, consider context, and make decisions that balance competing priorities—particularly when information is incomplete or conflicting.
  • Ethics: Applying moral reasoning and organisational values to situations where rules alone cannot determine the right course of action.
  • Creativity: Generating novel ideas, making unexpected connections, and approaching problems from angles that existing data and algorithms have not considered.
  • Leadership: Inspiring and aligning teams, navigating organisational dynamics, building trust, and creating the conditions for others to do their best work.
  • Domain Context: Deep expertise in a specific field that allows nuanced interpretation of information, anticipation of consequences, and recognition of what matters versus what merely appears to matter.

Digital Advantages

AI-assisted analysis, automation, predictive insight, and agentic workflows.

  • AI-Assisted Analysis: Processing and synthesising vast quantities of information at speeds far beyond human capacity, identifying patterns and insights that would take analysts weeks to discover manually.
  • Automation: Executing repetitive, rules-based tasks with perfect consistency and without fatigue, freeing human capacity for higher-value activities.
  • Predictive Insight: Using historical patterns and current data to forecast future outcomes, enabling proactive rather than reactive management.
  • Agentic Workflows: Autonomous or semi-autonomous systems that pursue defined goals across multiple steps and tools, adapting to conditions while maintaining guardrails.

Workforce Transformation

Build. Upskill. Redeploy.

The WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025 indicates that 41% of core skills required for most jobs will change by 2030. Companies that proactively build, upskill, and redeploy their talent will maintain competitive advantage.
